ABOUT / SHPE New Jersey

SHPE History

In 1974, a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles started a society, which will later revolutionize the Hispanic community for years to come. These engineers’ objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in Hispanic community. Through their vision, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was established.

Using the concept of Networking as a basis for the organization, SHPE quickly established two student chapters. This was the first connection to a whole network across the nation as well as countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE is composed of professional and student chapters throughout the nation.

SHPE Mission and Vision

SHPE changes lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development.
SHPE’s vision is a world where Hispanics are highly valued and influential as the leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians and engineers.

 Problem Statement:

On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy impacted the East coast bringing with it a record-breaking storm surge (rising of the sea). Thus, one of the problems risen from the event was storm flooding. Storm flooding heavily impacted New Jersey coastline and New York City Metropolitan area resulting in the destruction of thousands of homes and loss of personal property. Additionally, the storm caused significant damage to the public electrical grid and gas systems leading to large-scale outages and fuel shortages. The goal of this assignment is to develop an innovative flood control idea to protect the New York and New Jersey shoreline. Register your team here:
